Spitsbergen

“… the ice is melting. I visited Spitsbergen twice, in 2016 and 2018. Even in two years you can see the difference. …”

If you see Spitsbergen from above you think that ice and snowy landscapes are never ending. Nevertheless, the ice is melting. I visited Spitsbergen twice, in 2016 and 2018. Even in two years you can see the difference. More and more tourists are visiting the archipelago and big tourism companies are expanding and the global warming has a huge impact on nature. When you talk to people living there, they tell you stories about the impacts. The ice that has been covering the sea is getting smaller from year to year and this forces the polar bears to move. Valleys through which polar bears once used to roam are now only home to arctic foxes, reindeer and various birds. As a result, the polar bear population is declining faster and faster. To save the cold paradise from extinction, it is an important task to create awareness of the vulnerability of these fragile eco systems as their loss will have a huge impact on other regions of the world as well.
