PolarRES featured in CORDIS results pack highlighting climate storyline research approach

23 June 2025

PolarRES has been featured in a newly published article titled “Storylines reveal climate change impacts in polar regions”, available in six languages as part of the latest CORDIS Results Pack on Polar Regions (Second Edition). The article highlights PolarRES’s innovative contribution to understanding the effects of climate change in the Arctic and Antarctic, exploring how our research applies a “storyline” approach to climate modelling – a method that translates complex data into relatable scenarios that are meaningful for both local communities and policymakers. This recognition reinforces the critical role of PolarRES in bridging climate science and real-world decision-making.

We wanted to explain what different predicted scenarios might actually mean for local communities – Priscilla Mooney, PolarRES project coordinator

As outlined in the article, the PolarRES project has brought together leading experts to study how interactions between the atmosphere, ocean and sea ice shape both local and global climate systems. By developing storylines, such as one examining the consequences of strong warming in the Barents-Kara Seas on permafrost thaw and infrastructure, we offer tangible examples of how climate shifts may unfold. These narratives not only make the science more accessible, but also support adaptation planning at every level. The launch of our Polar Explorer tool further empowers communities to assess future risks and strengthen resilience across polar regions.
