PolarRES Early Career Researcher Bootcamp 2023
2 April 2024
PolarRES early career researchers gathered in Denmark last summer (2-8 July 2023) to network, collaborate, and learn from each other at the annual Bootcamp. We welcomed participants of a wide variety of nationalities from several institutions: British Antarctic Survey, University of Helsinki, Alfred Wegener Institute, Utrecht University, Norwegian Research Centre, University of Liège, Norwegian Meteorological Institute, National Antarctic Scientific Center of Ukraine and Danish Meteorological Institute.
The 2023 Bootcamp kicked off with a welcome dinner on the 2nd of July. The next day the participants began working on their projects concerning different work packages:
- Evaluation of the historical simulations with the global atmosphere models of WP2 (MPAS, VR-CESM2 and ICON).
- Model comparison and evaluation of extreme precipitation events over West Antarctica.
- Validation of the interactive biogeochemistry module in the Pan-Antarctic ROMS outputs.
- Evaluation of HCLIM. Comparison against MOSAiC (and CARRA) for the Arctic and Greenland.
PolarRES scientists also attended lectures, such as “Hot topics in the polar regions” by Ruth Mottram, grant writing by Xavier Ponte, and a lecture on “Ethics and perspectives on working with local communities” given by Heidrun Matthes. Next to insightful lectures, participants attended interactive workshops on science communication and mapping with QGIS. After lectures, workshops, and project work our PolarRES researchers ended the days with fun social activities such as BBQ, games and creative arts.
Thanks to all of the organisers and participants! We look forward to the next Bootcamp in June 2024.
Until then, reminisce with us about last year’s Bootcamp with our aftermovie series. In the first video, Xavier Ponte project coordinator from NORCE, outlines the importance of organising such events.
