PolarRES Annual Meeting 2025

3 July 2025

A highlight of the PolarRES calendar is the Annual Meeting, where researchers present progress within their respective Work Packages and outline future plans. This year’s meeting took place over three days, from 4 to 6 June, in Brussels. The agenda was packed with scientific updates, lively discussions, and social activities. Organised on a rotating basis, this year’s event was hosted by PolarRES project partner Arctik.

As the final Annual Meeting of the project, it carried special significance. Priscilla Mooney, PolarRES Project Coordinator, reiterated the importance of building a lasting legacy. To that end, she highlighted key goals for the gathering: to review progress across all Work Packages, develop communication materials, and refine the core outputs of the project.

Opening remarks by Priscilla Mooney

Following these opening remarks, representatives from each of the seven Work Packages delivered presentations on their latest developments.

WP1Circulation Storylines in CMIP6 projections and their implications for polar changes and teleconnections
WP2Impact of better resolved polar processes on Polar-lower latitude linkages
WP3Future Polar Climate
WP4Arctic processes and O-A-I interactions in the coupled climate system
WP5Antarctic processes an O-A-I interactions in the coupled climate system
WP6Polar climate change impacts on the environment and societal challenges and opportunities
WP7Communication, Dissemination and exploitation

Once each team had updated the consortium, the floor was given to PolarRES partners also involved in synergistic Horizon projects, including CRiceS and Ocean:ICE. The day concluded with a social dinner for all attendees at the stunning Grand Place in Brussels, providing an opportunity to relax and connect informally.

The second day began with a poster session, which encouraged dynamic discussions among attendees. The posters acted as effective conversation starters, offering a space for researchers to share feedback and methodological insights. For Early Career Researchers (ECRs), it was also a valuable opportunity to practise and refine their communication skills in a supportive environment.

Later in the morning, Hannah Hayes from WP7 facilitated an interactive “Legacy Workshop”. This session invited all participants to contribute ideas on how best to disseminate and apply the project’s outputs, a central aim for all Horizon projects. PolarRES research is intended not only to inform the scientific community but also to shape guidelines and influence future policy. Several activities and dissemination efforts are already underway to ensure this impact, so stay tuned for updates in the coming months.

Lively discussions on how to disseminate some of the project’s findings

The afternoon was dedicated to panel reporting and one-to-one meetings among project members, while the ECRs convened for their own dedicated session.

On the third and final day, attention turned to concluding discussions and reporting the outcomes of the previous sessions. The meeting ended with final remarks from Priscilla Mooney, bringing the event to a close.

We extend our sincere thanks to all participants for their contributions in making this Annual Meeting a success!
